CRIMINALIZATION OF PRESS SILENCING THROUGH SYMBOLIC TERROR: A CRIMINAL LAW ANALYSIS OF THE SENDING OF PIG HEADS AND RAT CARCASSES

Francisca Christy Rosana, a political desk reporter and host of Bocor Alus Politik on Tempodotco's YouTube channel, received a package containing a pig's head with both ears cut off on March 19, 2025. Two days later Tempo received a package that was thrown from outside Tempo Office by an unknown person, in which 6 rat heads were found decapitated. Tempo Editor-in-Chief Setri Yasra reported the terror to the Criminal Investigation Unit of the National Police Headquarters. This essay thoroughly discusses the case of terror experienced by the Tempo office to a number of its journalists which is a criminal offense, especially the discussion of the disruption of human rights to be free to speak out and express opinions, examining using the point of view of criminal law in Indonesia. By using normative juridical research methods, conceptual approaches, and media approaches. Furthermore, this essay states that the right to freedom of speech still gets a threatening response from some parties, especially if it offends the state issue. This is a form of violation of basic human rights.
