Policy on the Use of GenAI

The Indonesian Journal of Digital Crime and Criminal Justice recognizes the increasing use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools in academic writing, research assistance, data analysis, and language editing. While these technologies may support scholarly work, the journal maintains clear ethical standards to ensure transparency, accountability, and academic integrity.

This policy is developed in line with international best practices and publication ethics guidelines issued by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the transparency principles of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

1. General Principle

GenAI tools (such as large language models, text generators, or automated writing assistants) cannot be listed as authors and do not meet authorship criteria because they cannot:

  • Take responsibility for the accuracy or integrity of the work;
  • Approve the final version of the manuscript;
  • Account for ethical or legal obligations related to publication.

All responsibility for the content of a manuscript remains entirely with the human author(s).

2. Permitted Uses of GenAI

Authors may use GenAI tools for limited and responsible purposes, including:

  • Language editing and grammar improvement;
  • Improving readability and clarity of text;
  • Assisting in translation (with human verification);
  • Structuring ideas or outlining drafts;
  • Supporting literature summarization (with proper verification of sources);
  • Assisting in coding or data formatting (where applicable).

All outputs generated by AI tools must be carefully reviewed, verified, and edited by the author(s) before submission.

3. Prohibited Uses of GenAI

The journal strictly prohibits the use of GenAI tools for:

  • Generating fabricated data, references, or citations;
  • Producing entire manuscripts without substantial human intellectual contribution;
  • Misrepresenting AI-generated content as original human-authored research;
  • Creating false or unverifiable academic sources;
  • Manipulating peer review or editorial processes;
  • Producing content that violates research ethics or legal standards.

4. Disclosure Requirement

Authors must disclose any use of GenAI tools in the preparation of their manuscript. Disclosure should include:

  • The name of the tool used (e.g., ChatGPT or other AI systems);
  • The purpose of use (e.g., language editing, summarization, drafting assistance);
  • The section(s) of the manuscript where AI assistance was applied.

A disclosure statement may be included in the Acknowledgements or Methods section.

5. Responsibility and Accountability

Authors are fully responsible for:

  • The accuracy of all content, including AI-assisted text;
  • The validity of data, references, and arguments;
  • Ensuring that no plagiarism or ethical violations occur;
  • Verifying that AI-generated suggestions do not introduce errors or bias.

The use of GenAI does not transfer any responsibility from the author to the tool or platform.

6. AI in Peer Review and Editorial Process

The journal’s editorial and peer review processes are conducted under strict confidentiality. The use of GenAI tools by:

  • Editors is restricted to administrative or language-support tasks only, and must not influence editorial decisions;
  • Reviewers is discouraged for evaluating confidential manuscripts unless explicitly permitted by the Editor-in-Chief.

Manuscripts under review must not be uploaded into public or unsecured AI systems.

7. Citation and Transparency

If AI tools are used, authors are encouraged to maintain transparency in describing how these tools contributed to the research process. However, AI tools should not be cited as scholarly sources or authoritative references.

8. Ethical Compliance

Any misuse of GenAI, including fabrication, plagiarism, or misrepresentation, will be treated as academic misconduct and may result in:

  • Manuscript rejection;
  • Retraction of published articles;
  • Notification to affiliated institutions;
  • Further actions in accordance with COPE guidelines.

9. Policy Alignment

This policy is aligned with:

  • Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance on AI and authorship;
  • Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) principles of transparency in scholarly publishing;
  • International standards on responsible use of artificial intelligence in research.

10. Policy Updates

This policy may be updated periodically in response to developments in AI technology, scholarly publishing standards, and ethical guidelines. Any updates will be published on the journal’s official website.
